Harry Judd Talks New McFly Album And Hardcore Marathon Training
Source: Entertainmentwise
Star is taking part in Tough Mudder challenge.
Harry Judd may have put himself through months of physical training for Strictly Come Dancing back in 2011, but that's nothing compared to his latest challenge.
The McFly star is teaming up with pals Ben Crowder, Stuart Peters, Nick Thorley and Bob Bennett-Baggs to take part in both the London Marathon AND the Tough Mudder challenge for Teenage Cancer Trust and Eyes Alight, a charity set up by his wife Izzy.
The team have so far raised a staggering £16,900 for the causes, not far at all off their £20,000 target. You can support them here.
We had a chat with the singer to find out more about the ordeal.
This Tough Mudder business looks insane. What is it?
Well basically, I did the marathon like five years ago, and this year I wanted to do the marathon again to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust and Eyes Alight. The marathon's great and it's really hard, but I thought I wanna do something extra to make it harder so I can persuade people to part with their money! The Tough Mudder thing, I heard about it, it's a 12 mile run then 25 military-designed obstacles... ranging from ice water you've gotta crawl through, pipes, electricity, fire... it's pretty mental, pretty full-on. A real challenge - Tough Mudder say it's probably the toughest event in the world.
Are you in training for that at the moment?
Yeah, I am. My training at the moment is rest, because I seem to have injured myself... because we're doing the marathon as well, we're training for a marathon and then doing strength in between. Tough Mudder, you can imagine - monkey bars, nets, mud to crawl through - so yeah, when you're doing marathon distances [as well], you're really putting your body through it. But right now I'm having to be disciplined.
Not sure we could do all that ourselves...
I think the thing is, if you're asking people to sponsor you - like when I put on Twitter and emails, I'm saying 'please sponsor me, these are two great causes' - I think it helps them to know that I'm putting myself through some pain!
You're earning it!
I am earning that money! It's not the pain of doing the events, it's the pain of the training. I feel I really enjoy it, and I feel inspried by these causes so it's a really good focus.
And in terms of music, you guys have been in the studio with One Direction lately - is that an ongoing thing, are you working towards anything in particular...?
Yeah, it's been Tom and Danny, actually.
How's your own new stuff coming along?
We're busy writing. We had meetings last week planning how we're gonna record our next album, how many songs we need to write, what's the sound... When the band itself is making all the decisions, you have endless boundaries. It's quite hard sometimes to go 'Yeah that's the single' because we might have 30 great songs, and one's at one end of the spectrum and one's at the other end. Which one do we choose? Both are awesome, but if you release one it's 'McFly are going down this route...'! It's really hard to know where you want to be. So the process we're going through is looking at ourselves as a band and knowing what we ourselves are happy with. We'll hopefully record soon after the tour.
Bet your fans will be excited for that news.
Tom summed it up once... there are loads of successful bands out there, and we're still around and we're still going, we've been going for 10 years. We may not have the most fans in the world but we genuinely feel like we have the best fans. An unexplainable connection. That's what keeps us going.
