INTERVIEW: McFlying high in Rhyl
North Wales Pioneer

MCFLY have charmed audiences worldwide with their fine-craftly pop rock sound.

Drummer Harry Judd, aged 26, is looking forward to the lads’ gig at the Events Arena, Rhyl from 2.30pm on Sunday, August 12.

He said: “We’ve performed in North Wales a couple of times and we’ve always had a good time.

Denbighshire council organised the Rhyl show to mark the London 2012 Olympics closing ceremony, and the Essex-born sticksman is looking for to the Games.

He said: “I think everyone’s pretty excited it as it draws nearer.

“I had the honour of carrying the Olympic Torch on its final leg in Blackpool, so I’m super pumped about it.”

Harry said the band has recorded 11 new tracks for their sixth album, and are working on a further five songs.

He said: “I’m sure more will be written, so it’s always quite tough to decide what actually goes on the album and even the 15 songs we’ve got are quite varied.

“I think it always makes for a good album.”

While known for the pure pop of songs like 5 Colours in Her Hair and Obviously, recent albums have seen McFly embrace rock and synthpop.

While the foursome are thankful for their huge fanbase and a slew of hits, Harry said the general public tended to pigeon-hole them.

He said added: “Especially on our fourth and fifth album there’s stuff on there that would surprise people, so I think it’s often the challenge for us to keep progressing and trying to get more and more of a new audience listening to our music.

“It’s a hard one becuase we’ve been very successful and we’re grateful, but I think we’ve got that constant challenge of not getting the credit we think we deserve.”

Tickets are £20. To book, call the Pavilion Theatre box office on 01745 330 000 or book online at www.rhylpavilion.co.uk.

Band help McFly the flag for our search for Britain's unsung heroes
The Mirror

The chart-topping band backed the Daily Mirror's Pride of Britain tour before a gig in Newcastle today.

Chart-topping band McFly welcomed the Mirror’s Pride of Britain tour to Newcastle today with a rallying cry for nominations.

Harry Judd, Dougie Poynter, Danny Jones and Tom Fletcher backed our search for Britain’s unsung heroes before a gig in the north east.

Harry said: “We have been lucky enough to come to the awards and even present one. It is a very emotional night.”

Tom added: “You spend the whole night trying not to cry.”

Pride of Britain, sponsored by Lidl, honours ordinary people doing extraordinary things, and will be screened once again on ITV1 in October.

In Newcastle city centre, Benidorm star Crissy Rock dropped by to urge people to nominate.

She said: “I think Pride of Britain is wonderful, it celebrates all that is great about people who work unrewarded for others.”
